“All the variety, all the charm, all the beauty of life is made up of light and shadow.”
– Tolstoy, Anna Karenina
I had never read this quote before, I don’t think. But it is so true. Early sunlight glancing off the mountains creates such beauty, and that fragile early morning beauty disappears as the sun climbs and the light changes. I notice this each morning and evening.
Emilie, beautiful thoughts, thanks for sharing! I also love this quote for its eloquent truth. Nature’s beauty comes in light and shadow, but also, as I’ve been reflecting since yesterday, so does life. We have times of sadness that give depth to our times of joy, and times of joy that give hope to our times of sadness. And in our hearts, we have kind thoughts and cruel thoughts, good desires and bad desires, all mixed together to make us the unique kaleidoscopes we are. Tolstoy hit the nail on the head!
